Cellulite
Cellulite refers to the fatty deposits that form uneven, wrinkled, dimply skin typically found on the thighs, hips and buttocks of women. Cellulite is not caused by being overweight, as often slim woman and athletes have cellulite. In fact, even when fat is lost from other areas, cellulite remains and will actually be the last fat to disappear, because it occurs only when damaged fatty tissue accumulates. The connective tissue in skin is made up of fibres and acts as an anchor between the muscle and the skin. It also forms chambers that hold the fat cells in place. Cellulite develops when connective tissue beneath the skin which shape the fat, contract and then harden, thus resulting in areas where the skin is held down, while other sections bulge out, resulting in the typical ‘orange peel’ appearance. These irregular bulging dimples are called ‘cellulite’.
While harmless, the dimpled appearance is a cause of concern for some people. The cosmetic industry claims to offer many of what it calls ‘remedies’ but in truth very few ‘lotions or potions’ or so called ‘supplements’ can help to shift stubborn cellulite.
Equally, even more invasive procedures such as liposuction, do not resolve the problem of cellulite, in fact liposuction can make the cosmetic appearance of cellulite worse.
A balanced diet and exercise definitely helps with the fat content within the distorted cells and helps reduce the ‘dimpled’ appearance.
